Randall Lawson

1962 – 2026

Randall was much more than the driving force behind the YTCC. He was a successful racing driver, a passionate car enthusiast and the founder of Autopassion, the popular model car and motorsport shop he built and ran successfully for 36 years before sadly closing its doors in 2025.

From 2001 to 2004, Randall was a leading competitor in the Dutch Volvo 360 Cup, winning the championship in 2002 and 2003. But the intense pressure to secure points and championship results led him to question what motorsport should really be about.

In 2005, he began competing in the YTCC, driving a Renault Alpine A310 that he had rebuilt and developed into a highly competitive racing car. He went on to win the YTCC Division II title in 2009.

Through his involvement with YTCC, Randall became its leading promoter, helping shape the series from 2008 onwards. He championed a simple philosophy: race hard, race fairly, respect other people’s machinery, and enjoy the people as much as the competition.

Under Randall’s influence, YTCC developed into something rather different from a conventional championship. It brought together a remarkable variety of historic racing cars and competitors of differing abilities and budgets from across the UK and Europe.

For Randall, racing was about more than winning. He placed great emphasis on safety, fair competition and sportsmanship, recognising achievements throughout the grid rather than focusing solely on those at the front. He introduced awards that celebrated not just results, but the spirit in which people raced.

Just as importantly, he helped create a paddock community that extended well beyond the circuit. Above all, Randall wanted everyone to enjoy their racing, while still competing hard and fairly on track.

At Sports 2000, we greatly enjoyed racing in Europe with Randall and the YTCC. We will remember him not only for what he achieved, but for the enthusiasm, character and spirit he brought to the paddock.

YTCC will not be the same without Randall, but we know that Sonja, his wife, and the team he put in place will continue the excellent work he began, keeping his philosophy alive.

We look forward to racing with YTCC again in 2027.

RIP Randall Lawson. You will be greatly missed.
