SRCC Race Report Snetterton 300: 11th-12th October.
Report by Alan Jones
Following the thrills and dramas of an eventful racing season. The SRCC Sports 2000 Championship for 2025 concluded at the Snetterton circuit in Norfolk. Sports 2000 again supporting the GT Open Championship. Held on the 300 (3 mile) configuration of the circuit, the competitors balanced the intricacies of the infield loop before entering onto the high speed section with its long straight and the fast flowing section from the Bomb hole into Coram curve and the long uphill Finishing straight.
An entry of 26 cars assembled for the event, predominantly composed of the Duratec powered cars. Having won the Historic Championship, Nik Johhson decided he would step into the Duratec Lola that his brother had raced in the 2024 season. The overall Historic Championship contest having settled, there was still the matter of Class C to be resolved with Simon Aldworth and Mike Fry being in contention. The Duratec Championship and the Derek Bell Trophy were still to be decided over the course of the final event.
Heading the entry were the two main protagonists for the Duratec title. Defending Champion Michael Gibbins and his regular rival Josh Law. The races at Oulton Park and Donington having halted Michael’s run of form making the three races at Snetterton important for them both to do well.
David Houghton and Mackenzie Walker had both gained momentum through the season, whilst Richard Johnson added a Donington Park lap record to his CV at the last event. Making this event very special. Tim Tudor and John Iley were hoping for some good results following the hard work of their students over the year, but Friday made John think his run of bad luck was continuing.
During the first session of the Friday Test his race engine blew after 7 laps. Mike Penney the race technician drove back to Swansea, to assemble their latest engine. After a 5 hour drive to Wales and a two hour assembly of the engine he returned to Norfolk for 10.30 at night and John’s car was ready to go at 3.00 a.m. Saturday morning.
Mike Turner who also had experienced a terrible season was smiling on Saturday morning. He had been able to complete a full day of testing everything appeared to be going well. He was down on pace but that he put to the driver rather than the car.
James Barwell was back in charge in the family MCR, hoping to make it last the weekend. They had issues in the testing too the front RH upright collapsing destroying the wheel and tyre. Clive Hayes and Andrew Butler coming to their aid. They had been experiencing handling problems previously and James felt the engine was down on power. None of which he could explain but he was going to go racing.
In the Historic classes there would be two shared cars father and son, Chris and Pat Clifton, in Chris’s Tiga SC85 and Peter Needham sharing with his daughter Harriet Johnson in his Van Diemen RF02.
Qualifying
On a dry track with an overcast sky, from the outset of qualifying two names were in a race of their own Josh Law and Michael Gibbins. Michael hounding Josh to be within 4 tenths of a second at the end of the session but not quite able to place himself on pole.
Third fastest was Mackenzie Walker, who has really shone this year, coming close at times to the two former Champions but on Finals Weekend he was left with a deficit of 1.708 seconds to the pole sitter. Mackenzie though would have a real challenge on his hands, with 4 drivers all within a second of his time.
Richard Johnson, Tim Tudor, David Houghton all similiarily mounted in MCR and Paul Trayhurn in the first of the Gunns, all familiar with podium positions filling his mirrors.
Tom Stoten having only his third run of the year in the Gunn TS16 would be 8th and only just outside of the one second window to Mackenzie, 9th was Nik Johnson in the Lola, and completing the top 10 was Ash Law.
In the Historic Championship Paul Streat headed class A in the Lola, Pete Needham headed class B in the Van Diemen, with Simon Aldworth, Mike Fry and Chris Snowdon the three class C cars covered by less than a second . Simon having not been at Snetterton for a while followed Mike in the early laps the experience just putting him ahead on times.
For the University of Wales team the interval between qualifying and racing was going to be fraught as a front suspension joint had failed on Tim Tudor’s car sending him off towards the barrier, luckily without contact. So the team had to set to work repairing that problem, whilst over at MCR David Houghton’s steering had failed and he was another in need of work. The Clifton’s qualifying session did not quite make a lap. The front wheel came off the car with Patrick at the wheel. The post qualifying inspection by the scrutineers could not identify the cause and subsequent inspection in the paddock found the chassis to be out of alignment. Ending the participation of the family Tiga.
Race 1
It was Josh who led away from the lights with the field streaming through very close to grid order. Tom Stoten and Ash Law, being the ones to gain an opening lap advantage. In the Historics on their delayed start, Simon Aldworth made a fantastic start having a clear cars length lead into the first corner, with Paul Streat and Chris Snowdon in pursuit. Chris bettering them all to lead at the end of lap 1.
Lap 2 with Josh Law leading Michael Gibbins, Mackenzie Walker slowed going past the start and finish line a drive shaft had broken, he pulled off after the pit lane exit, passing the final podium spot to Richard Johnson. Richard also being in trouble finding himself with no brakes he pulled into the pits to retire, Richard had a rear hub collapse. Elevating Tim Tudor from 4th place to 3rd. David Houghton now occupying 4th spot, Paul Trayhurn 5th, Tom Stoten 6th with Ash Law 7th, Nik Johnson 8th, Roger Donnan 9th , Josh Needham completing the top 10.
Paul Streat had asserted himself to the head of the Historics race with Peter Needham second, Chris Snowdon 3rd, Simon Aldworth 4th and Mike Fry a distant 5th.
On Lap 4 all the hard work of the Swansea students came to nothing when the bottom upright failed on the front suspension of Tim Tudor’s car. A thread had stripped on the joint necessitating the requirement for a new upright to be put in place prior to the Sunday racing. The final podium position was looking like a poisoned chalice. David Houghton now having taken that final place on the podium.
The top 3 had pulled clear of the opposition. Michael Gibbins setting the race fastest lap in his pursuit of Josh Law, but every gain Josh appeared to have covered. As the race pace increased it was Tom Stoten that came under pressure first from Ash Law, who passed him on lap 6 leaving the way clear for Nik Johnson to attempt to pass the Gunn.
Roger Donnan got himself caught up in a tussle with Peter Brouwer and Josh Needham. Peter, gaining 8th place on lap 6, which left Roger and Josh battling until the end of the race. Their contest was caught by James Barwell at the end of the race too.
There were dices all the way through the field. Sadly not including John Iley who was gradually sliding down the order. John Owen’s race with Andrew Butler was caught by John’s sparring partner from Donington Andrew Noble. As the Duratecs battled so did the Historics, with Mike Fry catching Chris Snowdon and Simon Aldworth their very close battle enabling Mike to catch them.
Race 1 ended with a win for Josh Law from Michael Gibbins and David Houghton. Paul Trayhurn was 4th winning the DB class. Ash Law 5th, Nik Johnson 6th, Tom Stoten 7th, Peter Brouwer 8th, Roger Donnan 9th from Josh Needham.
Paul Streat headed the Historics, from Peter Needham with Chris Snowdon taking the Final podium position with Mike Fry 4th and Simon Aldworth 5th. One race completed and Simon was 3 points behind Mike for the Championship class.
Race 2
The grid for Race 2 was set by the second fastest lap time in qualifying. This gave Michael Gibbins pole position, with Josh Law alongside on the front row. The ill fated duo of Mackenzie Walker and Tim Tudor occupying row 2 with David Houghton and Richard Johnson occupying row 3. Further down the order Mike Turner would be starting 19th and at the back of the Duratec grid in 21st place was James Barwell. James problem in qualifying having to be overcome for a second time. The Swansea focus was on their two cars, Tim Tudor at the front having repaired the car and John Iley. John’s problem from Race 1 being traced to a throttle cable gradually loosening to give him only 35% of the power by the end of his race.
The Historics lined up with Paul Streat on pole with Mike Fry alongside, Simon Aldworth and Chris Snowdon occupying the second row whilst at the back on a circuit she admitted to not being able to gain an understanding of was Harriet Johnson. Simon having learned from Race 1 that one of the advantages Chris Snowdon had over him was running lower gear ratios. Those were changed only for Simon to find a bolt missing from the rear right brake caliper mount. Chris Snowdon came to the rescue and cut a bolt to length to ensure nothing untoward happened to Simon in the race.
At the start it was Pole Man Michael Gibbins who got away best with Josh Law in his wheel tracks. Tim Tudor was 3rd and up to 4th place from 6th on the grid was Richard Johnson. Mackenzie Walker having a slow getaway had been swamped by both Richard and David Houghton who was having a great end of season run. Tom Stoten was the first of the Gunns in 7th place with Paul Trayhurn in his Gunn 8th with Nik Johnson 9th in the Lola and Ash Law 10th.
Paul Streat sadly had to sit out race 2 from the side of the track, when he was left on the line at the start of the Historics race. The Lola stalling in the grid and then not restarting. This put Simon Aldworth at the head of that race the challenge being to stave off the tough opposition this time.
The top 6 positions stabilised, Michael Gibbins leading with Josh Law following but not seeing an opening to attempt an overtake. Tim Tudor 3rd with Richard Johnson just far enough back for Tim to be able to look forward rather than to his mirrors. David Houghton was dropping back as was Mackenzie Walker neither under threat for their 5th and 6th places. Those gaining places were Nik Johnson who passed Paul Trayhurn for 7th place, James Barwell who had got up to 14th place, and Mike Turner who was having his best event of the season, moving up to 16th place.
At the very back of the field was John Iley in the second university car. He had been too aggressive on cold tyres on the opening lap spinning off the circuit with a long drive to catch everyone up.
Lap 5 and Nik Johnson had moved up to 6th place, passing Tom Stoten. Tom having to contend with a train of cars headed by Ash Law, followed by Paul Trayhurn and Peter Brouwer who was the fastest of the group.
Following Roger Donnan had his own train of cars to contend with headed by James Barwell, John Owen, Josh Needham and Andrew Noble.
Simon Aldworth had lost the lead of the Historic Race to Chris Snowdon but the Pinto battle like race 1 was going to run to the end with Mike Fry close in their wheel tracks.
On lap 6 James Barwell overtook Roger Donnan to set off in pursuit of Peter Brouwer who had managed to damage his front splitter.
On laps 7 and 9 Josh Law drew close to the back of Michael Gibbins, suggesting a possible overtaking move but Michael remained ahead and as in Race 1 held the fastest lap for the race.
With so many close groups the race was building towards several climatic finishes. Paul Trayhurn was now lapping faster than, Nik Johnson, closing that gap down, James Barwell was closing the gap to Peter Brouwer, whilst James himself had Roger Donnan catching him.
John Owen was gradually easing away from Andrew Noble, who in turn was holding off a group of cars headed by Josh Needham, from Mike Turner and Andrew Butler. John Iley after a lonely race could finally see a car in front of him, in the form of Rollo Tomassi who was racing on new tyres for the last event of the year. Having eased them in during the course of Race 1 he was starting to feel the benefit of the tyre.
Lap 10, at the front Mackenzie Walker had caught up with Richard Johnson to battle for 4th place, Mike Turner had passed Josh Needham, for 17th place, John Iley was in striking distance of Rollo, and Chris Snowdon had his mirrors filled with a fast approaching Simon Aldworth.
Lap 11, the final tour and a win for Michael Gibbins, Josh Law second and Tim Tudor bringing home the University of Wales car to third place. Richard Johnson was a lonely 4th place. Mackenzie Walker retiring out on circuit a second drive shaft had failed. Sadly with no further spares this would be the end of the season for the talented young driver.
In 5th place came David Houghton from Nik Johnson 6th from Paul Trayhurn by 0.669 second. Ash law came home 8th by less than a second from Tom Stoten, with Peter Brouwer completing the top 10 from a fast approaching James Barwell who now had two 11th place finishes. But this time this would be his starting position for the last race of the season.
Mike Turner came home 15th, John Iley after his chase to catch the pack finished 18th passing Rollo on the last lap.
Simon Aldworth had a some good fortune. Having tried to pass Chris Snowdon several times, the wily competitor had kept him at bay. On the last lap on the final corner, Chris’s engine dropped onto three cylinders when a plug lead detached (something that had happened to Simon at the Oulton Park enduro) enabling him to pass Chris to take top step on the Historics podium with Mike Fry closing in 3rd place. This gave Simon Aldworth the lead of Class C with one more race to go.
Race 3
The third and final race of the weekend and the end of the 2025 season. Positions in the Championship classes remained to be decided but both Overall Champions were now known. The grid for this final race would be set from the finishing order of Race 2. James Barwell and Mike Turner having their best positions of the weekend. For John Iley the results of the students efforts could be seen in the data they were gathering, but there was still one race to go and Tim Tudor was starting from the row 2 slot so a podium finish to round off the season was a good possibility.
Paul Streat was ready to take part in the Final race. The battery had been a problem in race 2 but he and the car were fully charged for one last run. Simon Aldworth again lost his caliper bolt with Chris coming to his rescue for the second time.
After two really good starts over the weekend, Michael Gibbins did not get away well from the Pole position slot leaving Josh Law to lead the pack. Chris Snowdon from his front row slot on the Historics had no problem in leading the cars away. Simon Aldworth for once getting wheel spin off the line dropping him down the order.
At the end of lap 1 it was the familiar sight of Josh Law leading, but in second place was Tim Tudor, Richard Johnson third with Michael Gibbins back in fourth place. David Houghton was fifth, the Gunns of Paul Trayhurn and Tom Stoten 6th and 7th respectively. James Barwell 8th, ahead of Ash Law and Roger Donnan.
Nik Johnson from his 5th place grid position coming through in 11th place. The first lap had been chaotic further down the field. Josh Needham had his steering fail which resulted in him plowing into the side of John Iley. John continuing but again at the back of the pack just behind the Historic racers. Peter Brouwer being the other driver to be caught up in the incident possibly with Andrew Noble too. All three were some way down the order whilst Josh retired to the paddock at the end of the lap.
Harriet Johnson pulled into the pit at the end of the lap for some adjustments before continuing with her race. Andrew Noble retiring on the end of lap 2.
Chris Snowdon would be top of the Historics from Paul Streat, Simon Aldworth and Mike Fry.
Josh Law was one of the few competitors that appeared comfortable in this last race, he had everything under control as behind him everyone appeared to be undergoing a mental reset.
Nik Johnson was one of the first to move forward having dropped back at the start, overtaking Roger Donnan, for tenth position on lap 3.
Lap 4 and John Iley had cleared the Historic race still led by Chris Snowdon, Peter Brouwer was now into the train of cars following John Owen in 12th place. At the front Michael Gibbins had narrowed the gap to Richard Johnson not wanting to be left off the Final podium of the year. Although a top step placing was looking distant at the time with Josh having an almost 5 second advantage over Tim Tudor in second place.
Lap 5 Paul Streat took the lead of the Historic Race from Chris Snowdon with Mike Fry setting similar lap times to Paul to chase after Chris. Tom Stoten was coming under pressure from James Barwell, whilst Nik Johnson had a difficult lap bringing Roger Donnan back onto his tail. Ash Law who had been ahead of Nik dropped from 9th place to 16th behind Rollo. John Owen now had the recovering Peter Brouwer getting closer followed by Mike Turner and Andrew Butler.
Lap 6 just over half race distance and Michael Gibbins was in 3rd place. Tim Tudor had reduced the gap to Josh Law, but he had Michael closing.
Lap 8, Tim Tudor was leading, Josh Law suffering from a broken drive shaft had pulled to safe place. Very close behind him was Michael Gibbins. The University of Wales Students were almost assured a podium position but what would it be? Could Tim keep at bay the former champion?
In the Historic Race Paul Streat remained in the lead but Chris Snowdon had slipped from second to 4th when the car shed its starter motor, Simon Aldworth was now second just holding off a very determined Mike Fry.
The last part of the race was exciting with questions hanging over both podiums. At the chequered flag it was a win for Tim Tudor from Michael Gibbins, David Houghton in 3rd place having passed Richard Johnson on lap 7. Richard finishing 4th. 5th Place with his third DB class win of the day in the Gunn TS11 was Paul Trayhurn, 6th James Barwell, 7th Nik Johnson, 8th Tom Stoten, 9th Roger Donnan and 10th John Owen denying Peter Brouwer his hat trick of Class B wins.
Paul Streat was the Winner of the Historic Race from the close battling trio of Simon Aldworth, Mike Fry and a recovering Chris Snowdon. Mike having been holding second place until he was out manoeuvred when lapping a slower car by Simon Aldworth. Chris and Mike enjoying the closest finish of the weekend.
The Snetterton 300 circuit produced a wonderful finish to the season. Three races, one Qualifying session. No Red flags, no Safety cars, three different winners and lots of smiling faces. As mentioned after the race The Snetterton circuit is challenging and after 20 minutes you know you have been in a race.
There were a number of unlucky people, John Iley, Patrick Clifton and Mackenzie Walker being notable, but there were some great end of season results too. Mike Turner completing a test session, qualifying and 3 races without issues. James Barwell after a challenging build up finishing 6th overall in the last race.
After all the hard work from Friday to Sunday a well earned win for Tim Tudor and the University of Wales Team, which also earned driver and team the prize for Driver of the Day.
