Tim Matthews remembered
Posted on: August 19th 2022 • Posted in: General NewsThe SRCC is sad to announce the passing of long time supporter and competitor Tim Matthews.
Tim qualified as a teacher at Durham University and following 3 years teaching in Worcester took up a career in motorsport. He raced on both two and four wheels internationally. When Tim first took up motorsport it was as a rider in motocross where he enjoyed considerable success as a rider and also running his own motocross track near Worcester. Tim also worked closely with bike racers Mike Hailwood and Rodney Gould at their motorcycle shop in Birmingham. In 1982 he launched the National Motocross Academy and went on to organise the UK Supercross Championship which featured on television successfully for some years. Tim also became the transport consultant for Save The Children fund and also worked for the World Health Organisation on various motorcycle training projects.
Tim them moved into car racing competing in Formula 2000 and raced in the Thoroughbred Grand Prix Championship in a Tyrrell. Following on from this Tim devised and launched a television series, Be a Grand Prix Driver which was a six part series featured on Sky TV and included as Judges Jenson Button and Tiff Needell. The winning driver taking part in a race at Monza.Tim became a race instructor and ran his own track days on a regular basis
Most recently Tim raced and ran cars in Sports 2000 scoring a number of class wins during this time. Tim was always an enthusiastic supporter of Sports 2000 and right up until his death was planning to get involved with the championship once again.
